Bach St Matthew Passion (300)

Leipzig.  Good Friday, 1727.  We can only imagine the impact as Johann Sebastian Bach’s St Matthew Passion resounded through St Thomas’ Church for the first time. 300 years later, it remains fresh and profound. A timeless exploration of hopes and sorrows, it portrays the full spectrum of human emotion: the clamour of the crowd, the drama of betrayal, and the poignancy of grief, brought vividly to life in stirring choruses, heartfelt arias, and richly coloured orchestral writing.

Jeffrey conducts his last Good Friday Passion at Symphony Hall, a long tradition of which he has been an integral part.  His signature approach - introducing chorale preludes, congregational hymns and readings - draws us deeper into Bach’s world and creating a deeply moving experience for musicians and audience alike.

Running time is approx. 3 hour and 40 minutes, including a 30-minute interval.
Sung in German, with English surtitles.

Jeffrey says

"Bach’s St Matthew Passion is 300 years old. This liturgical reconstruction of the ‘great passion’ with our remarkable team of musicians from several generations is the ‘stuff of legends’."
