Words apart: Bach & Sandström Motets

Two composers respond to six texts in strikingly different ways. Bach’s motets are full of expressive intensity and deep devotion – vibrant works in which voices interweave with urgency. Sven-David Sandström conjures a luminous choral sound world, charged with emotional power. Across three centuries, the same words come vividly to life.

Running time approx. 1 hour 50 minutes including interval.

JS Bach Komm, Jesu, komm
Sandström Der Geist hilft
JS Bach Jesu, meine Freude
Sandström Fürchte dich nicht
Sandström Lobet den Herrn
JS Bach Singet dem Herrn

Jeffrey says

"There are two opportunities to catch a glimpse of James Burton in action before his appointment as my successor in September 2027. This concert of Bach Motets alongside Sven-David Sandström’s complementary commissions from the 20th century is a fascinating juxtaposition of empathetic styles (very Ex Cathedra)."
