Last Friday 7 February one of Ex Cathedra’s education projects, Singing Playgrounds, won a Music Teacher Award.

The Music Teacher Awards celebrate excellence in the UK’s music education sector. Singing Playgrounds was shortlisted alongside three other projects/companies in the UK in the category of ‘Best Musical Initiative’, awarded to an outstanding music education project that has made a sustained contribution to the musical achievement of a significant number of young people.

In choosing Singing Playgrounds, the judges said:

“a project whose effective simplicity is matched only by its scope and potential. Implemented in 500 schools and counting, it has lead to genuine ‘lightbulb moments’ for headteachers – who now realise the strength that lies in making music in the playground and in the community.”

Singing Playgrounds aims to involve everyone in the primary school community in singing. Ex Cathedra trains a group of children to lead their peers in playing singing games in the playground. The children are trained to lead, share, adapt and create singing games and a teacher is trained to support them in that role.
