Nostalgia has always been a potent force in British music; but the emotions it inspires can look forward as well as back. In this  programme, James MacMillan takes up where Elgar left off with a superb new choral work based on the Last Judgment, while a new work by Roxanna Panufnik, and much-loved favourites by Parry evoke a century of great music.

“I’ve written for Ex Cathedra before – just a little Christmas piece – but Jeffrey wanted to pursue a more ambitious project,” [MacMillan] explains. And this project certainly is ambitious, aiming as it does to follow on from the New Testament oratorio trilogy planned by Elgar.
