Jephte makes a rash vow and sacrifices his only child, but not before she sings an agonisingly beautiful lament.  St Peter denies Christ as the cock crows. This Lenten programme explores the beginnings of oratorio, and also includes glorious music by Monteverdi, Gesualdo and Anerio – whose publication Teatro armonico spirituale di madrigali lends the concert its name.

We’re delighted to give this concert as part of the Holy Week Festival curated by St John’s Smith Square & Tenebrae.

Programme includes:
Carissimi Jephte (25’)
Charpentier Le reniement de St Pierre (12’)
